Overview
Twelve hours. Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew. No softening. Mel Gibson's gospel is written entirely in blood.
Full Synopsis ›

The Passion of the Christ opens not with biography but with weight — the opening verse of Isaiah 53 appears before a single frame of film, anchoring everything that follows in the language of prophecy fulfilled. Gibson then drops the viewer directly into Gethsemane, where Jesus, sweating blood in the dark, wrestles with the cup before him and chooses to drink it. What follows is a two-hour march through arrest, interrogation, scourging, and crucifixion — with only brief, luminous flashbacks to the Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, and the carpenter's workshop in Nazareth breaking the relentless forward momentum. Jim Caviezel's Jesus does not speak much; he endures much. Every character who touches him — Pilate, Caiaphas, the soldiers, the weeping women of Jerusalem, his mother Mary — is defined by their response to a man they cannot fully account for. The film ends where the Gospels insist it must: an empty burial cloth, and a risen man stepping into light.
