Simba’s journey from a prince to an exiled runaway living in a state of spiritual amnesia mirrors the prodigal son’s journey or humanity’s fall. His transition back to the Pride Lands represents a profound theological shift: he must confess his perceived guilt, accept his true identity as the rightful king’s son, and take up his calling. This aligns beautifully with the biblical concept of sanctification and mission, where believers are called out of comfortable complacency to engage in spiritual restoration.
Furthermore, Mufasa’s sacrificial death to save his son echoes the substitutionary nature of Christ’s sacrifice, though in a limited, non-soteriological sense. When Simba is lost in darkness and guilt, Rafiki reminds him that the king “lives in you,” pointing toward the indwelling of the Holy Spirit or the divine image bearer’s identity. Rafiki’s famous lesson that “the past can hurt, but the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it” serves as a poignant secular parallel to biblical repentance—turning away from past sins and failures to walk in truth and righteousness.
