While Hayao Miyazaki’s world is rooted in Eastern folklore rather than biblical revelation, the film offers a profound meditation on the significance of a name and the concept of identity. In Scripture, God calls His people by name, establishing an ontological security that the world cannot shake. Yubaba’s theft of Chihiro’s name serves as a chilling illustration of how sin and worldly systems seek to strip us of our true identity as image-bearers. Chihiro’s struggle to remember who she is mirrors the Christian’s journey of “remembering” our adoption in Christ amidst a culture that demands we conform to its transactional labels.
The film also features a striking parallel to the doctrine of total depravity and the need for external cleansing. When the “Stink Spirit” arrives, Chihiro’s willingness to serve and endure the filth leads to the revelation of the spirit’s true, noble form once the “thorn” of human pollution is removed. This evokes the regenerative work of the Gospel—where the “filthy rags” of our condition are washed away through a transformative encounter with grace. Furthermore, the self-sacrificial love Chihiro displays for Haku, particularly her willingness to venture into the unknown to return what was stolen, echoes the “greater love” described in John 15:13, illustrating how selfless intervention can break the power of a curse.
