Ruth Moably is a rising hip-hop artist with a complicated past who walks away from the Atlanta music scene after tragedy claims both her boyfriend and his father—deaths she soon discovers are connected to her ruthless manager Syrus. She accompanies the grieving widow Naomi back to her small Tennessee hometown, taking whatever work she can find and landing at the vineyard of Bo Azra—known to everyone as Boaz—a former Marine and Wall Street veteran who now tends his late father's winery. What begins as neighborly kindness quietly deepens into romance, even as Syrus closes in and Naomi wrestles with her long-simmering anger at God. Set against a backdrop of church communities, harvest festivals, and gospel music, the film traces Ruth's slow movement from guarded survivor to a woman rooted, at last, in love and belonging.

Critics Reviews

PI

Plugged In gave the film a “Light” caution for adult viewers—its most favorable content tier. Reviewer Emily Tsiao praised the film’s faith-positive messaging and its portrayal of earthly love as a reflection of God’s perfect love for humanity. She highlighted Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi, Boaz’s Christlike generosity, and the film’s consistent prayer life as genuine strengths. Tsiao noted the s-word and suggestive flirting as the ceiling of the film’s edge, finding the content concerns minimal for an adult audience.

M

Movieguide awarded Ruth & Boaz four entertainment stars. The publication described the film’s worldview as “very strong Christian and moral,” citing scenes of corporate prayer, discussions of God’s plan, a live rendition of a gospel hymn, and a church congregation mobilizing to serve a struggling family. Movieguide catalogued content carefully—three mild obscenities, one s-word, a brief fistfight with a single bloody nose—and found the overall package one they could recommend to adult audiences.

RU

Culture critic Joseph Holmes offered a balanced assessment, describing Ruth & Boaz as a film that reminds viewers of both the strengths and the limitations of Tyler Perry’s filmmaking instincts. He praised the film’s willingness to center faith on a mainstream platform—noting that Ruth prays for God to receive glory from her music while her friend jokes that they’d like a little glory too—as exactly the kind of moment that distinguishes Tyler Perry’s work from secular romance. However, Holmes argued that if the Perry–Franklin Netflix partnership is to fulfill its potential, future projects will need tighter scripts and more emotionally developed arcs.

I

The film holds a 6.0/10 user rating, reflecting the sharp division between viewers who responded warmly to its faith-positive romance and those who found the adaptation too loose a reading of the biblical text.
