Bart Millard grows up in Greenville, Texas, under the crushing weight of a father whose shattered football dreams have curdled into violence and contempt. Music becomes his escape, and eventually his vocation — but the memory of Arthur Millard's fists and cutting words follows him into every rehearsal and every relationship. When Bart learns that his estranged father has been transformed by a genuine encounter with Christ, he must decide whether forgiveness is possible for a man who gave him so many reasons to withhold it. Out of that impossible reckoning comes the lyric that would become the best-selling Christian single of all time.

Critics Reviews

PI

Holz described the film as being about “the paradoxical link between pain and redemption, between brokenness and forgiveness,” noting its honest portrayal of how deeply Arthur’s dysfunction wound Bart — and how the film’s resolution feels earned rather than manufactured. He gave it a broadly positive recommendation with light content caution for all ages.

D

The site awarded the film its Dove Seal of Approval for All Ages, calling it “a story of tragedy and triumph; a living epistle of grace and healing” and noting that Bart’s story functions as a visible illustration of God’s ability to accomplish far more than anyone could anticipate — their reviewer referenced this as Ephesians 3:20 made visible on screen.

CS

Vera gave an enthusiastic recommendation, calling it “well told, well directed and solidly acted,” and singling out the final act as a “powerful, spirit-infused climax.” The reviewer observed that the film is ultimately about divine providence — God quietly orchestrating painful circumstances toward both His glory and the characters’ benefit.

CF

Writing from a Christian critical perspective, Batiansila described the Erwin Brothers as filmmakers “on the crest of a new wave” in faith-based cinema — directors who understand the screen rather than simply the sermon. He noted their Spielbergian use of camera movement and argued the film succeeds precisely because its makers “don’t seem particularly interested in making you a Christian with their film. They just wanted to make something beautiful.”

RT

The film holds a 69% Tomatometer score and 91% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I

Carries a 7.3/10 user rating.

CS

Rated age 10+, with reviewers noting that the film effectively portrays abuse, forgiveness, and redemption, while observing that “the female lead falls flat.” Broadly recommended for families and Christian audiences.

HR

Scheck offered a negative assessment, arguing the film “suffers from a terminal case of self-importance” and that the Erwin Brothers directed it “in plodding fashion.” He also criticized the decision not to depict Arthur’s violence more fully, contending that the film “undercuts its chief message by being coy.”
