This film exists entirely as a Gospel proclamation—there is no secular framing. Every element of the production, from the concert to the monologues to the episode itself, orbits a single question that the prophet Isaiah raised and the Bethlehem stable answered: what does it mean that God is with us? (Isaiah 7:14) The production does not reach toward the gospel; it starts there.
The four monologues anchor the film’s theological spine. Four actors from the series—Nathaniel (Austin Reed Alleman), Thaddeus (Giavani Cairo), Judas (Luke Dimyan), and Eden (Lara Silva)—each explore a Hebrew name of God: El-Roi (the God who sees me), Jehovah Shalom (the Lord is peace), Jehovah Raah (the Lord is shepherd), and Emmanuel (God with us). The progression is deliberate. Each character speaks from their own story in the series, connecting the name not to abstraction but to lived experience, so that by the time the episode itself begins, the audience has been theologically primed to receive it.
The “Messengers” episode grounds the Incarnation in the body. Jenkins and his writing team refuse the prettified Nativity of porcelain figurines. The Bethlehem of this episode is sweaty, desperate, and smells like animals. When Joseph cannot find a room, his frustration lands with the weight of a man who feels inadequate to protect the person he loves most. The moment resonates precisely because it is so ordinary. The Incarnation takes flesh in a filthy stable, which is exactly where the gravity of John 1:14 begins to press—God did not slip into a palace through the side door; he arrived in manure, to be near the people who smell like it.
The dual-timeline structure carries a quietly powerful theological argument about testimony. The aged Mary of AD 48 is not simply a narrative device. She is a keeper of memory, bearing witness to what God did so that others might believe. Her charge to Mary Magdalene—take this to Luke—recalls the mechanism by which the entire New Testament reaches the reader: through witnesses who refused to let the story die. Luke himself writes that he set out to compile what eyewitnesses delivered, so that his reader might have certainty about the things they had been taught (Luke 1:1-4). The episode dramatizes that process with affecting simplicity.
The Magnificat is woven into the birth scene with unusual care. As Mary labors, she begins reciting what becomes known as her great hymn of reversal—the song in which the humble are lifted and the mighty brought low (Luke 1:46-55). The dramatic framing transforms familiar words into something intimate: a young woman in labor singing of what God has done and will do, not as a theological aria but as an act of holding on. When Joseph asks what she is saying, she answers with the tender deflection that has followed her throughout the series:

“As you know, I like to treasure things in my heart.”

Mary’s gratitude toward Joseph touches on a theme central to the gospel’s social imagination. At one quiet moment on the road, Mary reaches across the gap between them:

“Thank you for protecting me. I should have said something months ago. No one would have blamed you for divorcing me publicly… Joseph, you are a brave man. And you are godly. I should have said thank you.”

This is precisely the kind of marital tenderness The Chosen has made its signature: the recognition that obedience to God is lived out first in the small, costly moments of ordinary relationship.

The concert portion serves a genuinely liturgical function. Those who came expecting a film and received an hour of worship music raised a fair objection about marketing. However, considered on its own terms, the concert functions as preparation—teaching the gathered audience to sing and receive before the story is told. Brandon Lake’s testimony captures what many artists expressed:

“I see myself in these episodes. I see myself in the disciples. And I can’t help but just feel the love Jesus has for me, and how my story is just like theirs, and how I fall and He picks me up again and again, and He continues to love me.”

For KING & COUNTRY performing “Go Tell It on the Mountain” on The Chosen’s Capernaum set, We The Kingdom opening with “Silent Night (Heavenly Peace),” the One Voice Children’s Choir carrying “What Child Is This?”—these are not filler but invitations. The format unknowingly mirrors the ancient liturgical shape: the community gathers, sings, hears the Word proclaimed, and is sent.

There is no competing moral or spiritual framework present.

None. The birth scene is handled with full restraint; there is nothing here that approaches suggestive or sexual territory.
