Christmas With The Chosen: The Messengers moves through three distinct registers to tell one story. The film opens with an extended concert on The Chosen's Utah sets, featuring contemporary Christian artists performing carols both classic and newly written, with four Chosen actors stepping in between performances to meditate on Hebrew names of God. The narrative centerpiece arrives as a dual-timeline episode: in AD 48, a frail and aging Mary gathers Mary Magdalene in the house of Lazarus and entrusts her with the firsthand account of Jesus' birth—a story that then unfolds in 4 BC Bethlehem, as a young, exhausted Mary and her quietly steadfast husband Joseph make their difficult journey, are turned away from every door in the city, and finally welcome the Son of God into a stable thick with straw and manure.
