Luke’s apprenticeship under Yoda provides a fascinating parallel to the Christian walk of sanctification. Just as a believer must “put off the old self” (Ephesians 4:22), Luke is told he must “unlearn what he has learned.” His failure in the cave on Dagobah serves as a sobering reminder of the doctrine of total depravity; when he asks what is in the cave, Yoda responds, “Only what you take with you.” The subsequent vision of his own face beneath Vader’s mask illustrates that the greatest enemy we face is not an external “Empire,” but the sin nature residing within our own hearts.
