The film serves as a vibrant, if stylized, illustration of the doctrine of adoption. Will’s journey from a self-reliant orphan to someone who realizes he has a “place in this world” mirrors the believer’s transition from spiritual alienation to being a co-heir with Christ. Theologically, the movie highlights the tension between the “old man” and the “new creation”; Will’s struggle to drop his facade reflects the universal human fear that God’s grace might be contingent on our performance. When the truth of his past is revealed, the reaction of the camp community provides a pastoral picture of the church as a hospital for the broken rather than a museum for the perfect.
Scripturally, the film resonates with the themes of Psalm 68:6, “God settles the solitary in a home.” The songs, many of which are reimagined contemporary Christian classics, reinforce the message of God’s sovereignty and the beckoning call of the Gospel. However, the film generally avoids these pitfalls by grounding its climax in the necessity of honesty, confession, and the recognition that we cannot save ourselves. The secular “mask” Will wears is shown to be a burden, and the film effectively argues that true freedom is found only when that mask is removed in the presence of Grace.

The violence in the film is minimal and largely restricted to the opening sequence where Will is pursued by the police following a non-violent but illegal stunt. During the camp activities, there is some slapstick-style physical comedy—falls, collisions during games, and a spirited game of dodgeball—but these are presented in a fun, communal spirit without any intent to harm. The lack of physical violence allows the film to focus entirely on the internal, spiritual warfare Will experiences as he decides whether to trust the people around him or flee back to his old life.
