John Coffey serves as one of cinema’s most poignant “Christ-figures.” His initials (J.C.) and his role as a “sin-eater” who physically absorbs the darkness and disease of others mirror the substitutionary atonement of Christ. When John describes feeling the world’s pain “like pieces of glass in my head,” he illustrates the weight of a fallen creation that only a Savior can truly bear. The film captures the tension of living in a “broken” world where the innocent suffer for the guilty, a core tenet of the Gospel story.
For the believer, the film offers a meditation on the mystery of God’s presence in the midst of suffering.
